Earth has flourished since the first hyperspace tests of 2208 eventually colonizing planets as they go, with the use of special nanites, called terraformers which alter a planet's climate to make them livable.
This can only be done once per planet however, and the process is rather slow and the results of a failure can be catastrophic. Most wars between the Human races and their colonists and nations have dwindled to the politician's table. However there is always a mighty security force run by the overall Gaean Empire Senate. Each elected by it's representing planet or colony. The senate is the true home of all things good to spawn from democracy.
It does take a vast amount of time and effort to colonize, and most of the nearby solar systems had been either terraformed or abandoned due to un-alterable or failed climates. Probes brought back information on promising Systems, one such was the Caerus system, completely devoid of life but most of the planets with either maturing or convertible atmosphere and climate.
Plans were drawn up and put into place to build a battle-station to oversee the colonization of such a far off system, and allow for a relay point to act as a hyperspace gate back to earth. The construction took over a year, until, when just nearing completion, a strange anomale was detected, as some form of pods appeared to shot out of the anomale heading for each of the 6 known planets in the system, upon impacting, the planets began to terraform at an incredible rate. However, they were changed in a way that was not designed for any type of human life. Though most contained breathable atmospheres, strange plant life, harsh deserts and various other types of settings arose along the crusts of the planets.
Probes were once again launched to investigate the anomale, however upon approaching this, which they had now managed to work out was in many ways similar to a worm-hole, yet much more stable and almost artificial in the sense it never closed. The probes came under fire from hundreds of ships that emerged from the worm-hole. Communications were sent to see if this was some sort of pirate activity, or perhaps the first encounter with an intelligent species. Only one reply came back over the coms. Which spoke in a very dull deep english. "We have translated your puny tongue, these planets are now the property of the Slak and we demand you withdraw immediately from this galaxy."
Signals were sent back and forth from the station via the now constructed gate, to either bring re-enforcements or to advise on tactics. Leaving the galaxy was an impossibility, The Gaean empire had simply not the technology to travel so far even in hyperspace, and a Light-speed voyage would take millions of years.
With this decided, the senate voted to test the metal of these creatures. And so, the first galactic war began...
